Published this week by the MHCLG – The long awaited ‘National Design Guide’.

Anna Parsons & Laura Aldridge from our in-house design team have been getting to grips with this important government guidance document.

The document conveys the government’s recognition that design continues to play an important role in creating character; nurturing and sustaining community; and positively addressing environmental issues affecting climate. A key feature of the new guidance is the introduction of the ‘ten characteristics of well- designed places’.

Pleasingly a few old favourites remain (Context, Identity, Uses, Built Form and Movement). However, Anna and Laura are excited to note the governments recognition of some new important characteristics that support the achievement of well-designed places.

They will be busy working with multi-disciplinary partners to identifying how this affects our planning applications moving forward and practical solutions for implementation.
